Lossless and lossy compression methods for Images and Video are highly desired for their efficient storage and for transmission purposes. In lossless compression, as name suggests, decoder reconstructs the exact original signal at the expense of low compression ratio. On the other hand, lossy methods give high compression ratio but causes loss of information. However, typically, lossless compression methods use to be a component of lossy methods. Besides being a component of lossy methods, lossless methods have specific application areas such as medical imaging, images of historical importance, images for art and culture etc. In this talk, we shall discuss about various predictive coding methods used for lossless compression and will also discuss about the challenges in development of new methods.

Dr. Anil K. Tiwari is currently a faculty member and head of the Electrical Engineering Department at Indian Institute of Technology Jodhpur (IIT Jodhpur). He obtained his Bachelor of Engineering degree in Electronics Engineering from Nagpur University, and Master of Technology and Ph.D degrees from IIT Kharagpur. His current research interest includes development of algorithms for image and video compression, noise minimization, interpolation, watermarking, etc. He is currently working on development of affordable health monitoring systems. He has nearly 40 publications in IEEE conferences and Journals of national and international repute.
